Using zircon in mafic migmatites to disentangle complex high-grade gneiss terrains – Terrane spotting in the Lewisian complex, NW Scotland

چکیده
The zircon record of complex high-grade gneiss terrains is key to interpreting their tectonothermal evolution. Typically, such studies focus on zircon-rich, felsic rocks, which commonly have a complicated (partial melting, inheritance, partial dissolution, and reprecipitation) record. Here we show that metamorphosed mafic rocks retained melts (i.e. in situ leucosomes) provide the evolution crustal blocks simpler easier interpret. We apply our method Archaean gneisses iconic Lewisian NW Scotland use it test proposed terrane model based largely geochronology. Our work focusses migmatites central region, where identified long-established metamorphic age clusters ca. 2.75 Ga 2.5 Ga, as well 2.85 protolith ages. A finding these ages are recognised across both putative region previously different histories. oldest (inherited) similar those within other outside region. Thus, all likely share common pre-metamorphic history, questioning validity for complex. demonstrate lithologies powerful tool identifying stages polyphase complexes typify Earth’s earliest rock records offer additional context assessing geodynamic

Early basic magmatism in the evolution of Archaean high-grade gneiss terrains: an example from the Lewisian of NW Scotland
Amphibolite blocks from an Archaean (2.9 Ga) trondhjemite-agmatite complex in the Lewisian at Gruinard Bay have a varied trace element and R E E content. Whilst some of the variability is attributable to element mobility during high-grade metamorphism and subsequent trondhjemite magmatism, it is for the main part considered to be a primary feature of the amphibolites. The observed trace element...
متن کاملThe Loch Maree Group: Palaeoproterozoic subduction–accretion complex in the Lewisian of NW Scotland
The Lewisian complex of northwest (NW) Scotland has long been correlated with intercontinental Palaeoproterozoic belts of the North Atlantic region but uncertainty about the age and origin of the supracrustal rocks of the Loch Maree Group (LMG) and the apparent lack of subduction-related intrusive rocks have precluded interpretations of a similar tectonic setting for the Lewisian. We present in...

Article history: Received 11 October 2016 Accepted 5 January 2017 Available online 14 January 2017 The Siletz terrane, a predominantly mafic accreted oceanic terrane, is located in the Cascadia forearc region of Oregon, Washington and Vancouver Island. The terrane represents a late Palaeocene–Eocene large igneous province that consists of pillow lavas, massive flows and intrusive sheets. Previo...
متن کاملThe Massabesic Gneiss Complex, New Hampshire: a Study of a Portion of the Avalon Terrane
Geochemical data from the 625 Ma Massabesic Gneiss Complex of southern New Hampshire show strong affinities for other Avalonian rocks of southern New England and suggest continental rifting in the Late Proterozoic. Migmatized paragneiss, the dominant rock type in the complex, has major and trace element compositions that are compatible with graywackes from continental arcs. The paragneiss also ...

The new copper processing plant of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex consists of two parallel circuits. After a primary crushing, the ore is sent to a SAG mill, and the product is further ground in a ball mill. The overflow of the hydrocyclones is fed to a flotation circuit that contains 8 rougher tank cells (RCS130), 3 cleaner cells (RCS50), 5 scavenger cells (RCS50), and a flotation column (as r...
